Level Up Experience

MCA’s new education series LUX—“Level Up Experience”—gives artists the chance to advance and experiment in their personal craft. As part of our overarching secret mission to help extend and improve the artistic lifespan of Cleveland creatives, the LUX series is offered free of charge and hosted by local peer artists.

Crash Course

Maelstrom Collaborative Arts’ Crash Course is a series of artistic development workshops in the essentials of DIY live performance production. Crash Course provides a focused, hands-on introduction into lighting, sound, stagecraft, and using multimedia playback software in both traditional and non-traditional venues.

Whether you’re a dancer, musician, actor, or a multidisciplinary avantgarde noise performance art provocateur, Crash Course will help you know what to plug in, where to plug it in, and how to turn it on.

All targeted modules are taught by MCA’s Executive Artistic Director Jeremy Paul, a veteran producer and artist with over 17 years of DIY and site-specific production experience.

Projections

March 18, 1-3 PM

Harness the power of the moving image! This crash course will look at the basics of using projection in live performance including setting up equipment, cueing video during a show, and mapping onto different surfaces. Software will include QLab and Madmapper.

Creative Sandbox

Think of it as a chance at “Creative Play”; Creative Sandbox provides a space for local artists to share methods they use to spark ideas and generate creativity.

Local artists will guide participants through hands-on exercises to experiment within various artistic disciplines. Then, participants will then have access to MCA resources to develop and work on their own projects.

Sign-ups will be available in April

Test Drive

Building off of the specialized techniques learned in Creative Sandbox, Test Drive is a paid opportunity to create simply for the sake of creation. If you are looking for a dedicated, supportive environment to develop a project or experiment with some new ideas, Test Drive is for you.

This opportunity is only open to Creative Sandbox participants.

We aim to to offset both the time and money it takes to further develop an artistic practice, so each Test Drive participant will receive an unrestricted stipend of $200 as well use of our rehearsal space, access to MCA equipment and materials (as available) and the continued guidance of the Creative Sandbox practitioners to aid in creation of your work.

If Creative Sandbox is a time to "play", think of Test Drive as an artistic study hall. Participants do not have to complete or display whatever they chose to work on for this project. You are just here to develop your craft with the resources and support we can provide!
